Ramayana & The Rama Project

The "Ramayana" has been described as "the greatest epic in world history."

The story tells of Rama, an exiled prince whose wife is abducted by a demon and his struggles to recover her, aided by the King of the Monkies.

Ramayana is breathtaking in its scope, and filled with dazzling imagery.  At the same time, it is as intimate and accessible as a fairy tale.

Throughout the story, characters respond to choices of right and wrong, good and evil, metaphors that reflect the mind of the listener.

Ramayana opens a window to the world and culture of India.

Telling Ramayana
The epic scale of the Ramayana lends itself to an evening length program in theaters, or, ideally, to several sessions over several days, as in a festival or institute setting.  For shorter programs, excerpts from the epic are selected.

The Rama Project
"The Rama Project" is a residency program available to schools for grades 4 - 12, in collaboration with kathak dancer Rachna Agrawal and Young Audiences of Connecticut.

The four day residency combines storytelling with reflective writing and discussions about character development.  In a culminating activity, Rachna Agrawal performs traditional dances based on episodes of the epic, discussing links between written expression, storytelling, and the language of dance.
